Chair Yoga and Floor Yoga For Seniors
Every Tuesday Tom teaches yoga to a great group of seniors at Mather’s Café, located at 3235 N. Central Avenue in Chicago. He affectionately refers to this as "My Seventeen Grandmothers" class. (There are one or two grandfathers in attendance also.) Chair Yoga is an hour-long class, from 10– 11 am. It is followed by a Gentle Yoga class from 11 am – noon. Visit www.matherlifeways.com for more information.
Chair Yoga Instruction By Telephone!
On the second and fourth Mondays of every month, from 2-3 pm, Tom teaches a Chair Yoga class on the phone to a group of seniors scattered throughout the country!
This innovative program is facilitated by Mather Lifeways and is a wonderful opportunity for folks who are unable to get out and about to attend classes. Each participant is provided with photographs of students in various chair yoga postures. The good folks who posed for these pictures are actual students in Tom's Chair Yoga class at Belmont & Central. Telephone students have visual references as they follow Tom's verbal instructions for an hour of breathing, stretching, and yoga!
For more info or to register for these classes, seniors should contact Kate Paz, Director, Programs Without Walls Mather Lifeways 3235 N. Central Avenue Chicago IL 60634 (Tel): 773.205.3306 (E-mail): teltopics@matherlifeways.com
Have you ever hesitantly but hopefully signed up for a “Gentle” Beginning Yoga class, only to find that you were expected to do postures much too challenging, with no allowances made for your ability level, and no more easily accessible variations presented as options?
In THIS truly gentle beginner's class, all postures can be and are modified for any students with limited range of motion due to previous injury, surgery, medical conditions, or lack of activity. We use props such as yoga blocks and straps, and variations of many postures can be done while seated in a chair. In fact, often we ALL sit in chairs to experience certain postures. You are encouraged to work comfortably within your parameters and never pressured into a pose that you are not ready to do. You're applauded for listening to the messages from your own body and never criticicized for not doing more.
These classes can also be described as foundational hatha classes for those who have never practiced yoga, and for anyone preferring a less vigorous, less physically demanding style.
Each class begins with a slow warm-up and gentle stretching. A variety of lying and seated mat and simple standing poses are taught to increase strength, flexibility and body awareness. Emphasis is on proper breathing, on mindful coordination of breath with movement, and on enjoying the experience!
This class is offered on both Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 - 11:15 am
